Vaughan, Ontario was incorporated as a township in 1850 when, in the same year, a road was built linking it with Toronto. In 1971, York Region regional government was established and was merged with the village of Woodbridge which formed the Town of Vaughan. Over time, its population grew in the area from 300 in 1836 to 4,873 in 1935 and 15,957 in 1960. Currently, the population stands at over 218,000. It’s an ethnically diverse region with a wide variety of attractions including McMichael Canadian Art Collection, Reptilia Zoo, Canadian Soccer Hall of Fame, Canada’s Wonderland, Boyd Conservation area, J. E. H. MacDonald House and, of course, York University.
Education is very prominent in Vaughan. York University has a large enrollment of over forty-three thousand students across ten different facilities. There are also many elementary schools, high schools, and private schools in the city. Vaughan is also known for the Seed-Barker archaeological site located on the Humber River which is a 16th century Iroquois village with more than a million artifacts found in the area. And you may remember the powerful tornado that ripped through the area in 2009 critically damaging over two hundred homes with almost six hundred others to be demolished. It flipped vehicles, ripped up trees, and left thousands of households with power.
