How To Choose A Drain Cleaner

Knowing how to choose a drain cleaner is helpful because it’s inevitable that your drains will clog or have clogged in the past. Most people will run out to the store and guess how to choose a drain cleaner and pick up a drain cleaner without knowing much about them. Although, the best method for keeping your drains from clogging is preventative. Watching what goes down the drain is the simplest way to prevent untimely clogging and the backup or water damage that goes with this.

The most common substances to clog drains are soap residue and hair in the bathroom and in the kitchen it’s fat, oil, grease and food particles. Fat, oil, and grease congeal and become solidified which blocks the drain and food particles can do the same, especially absorbent food such as rice. And then, of course, it could be an object such as a toy, bottle cap, or jewelry that ends up ultimately clogging the drain when it gets mixed up with the other substances.

As for how to choose a drain cleaner, there are different kinds of chemical-based drain cleaners, environmentally friendly enzymatic drain cleaners, and home remedies to choose from. Some are more expensive or effective than others and it’s worth knowing about each before you make your decision.

Chemical based drain cleaners come in powder, liquid, and gel forms. They induce chemical reactions which involve giving or taking electrons to the substance that is doing the blocking which also generates heat in the process.

Chemical Based Drain Cleaners:

  • Caustic drain cleaners which utilize substances such as caustic potash and lye have base chemicals which give electrons to the substance that is clogging the drain and it’s the reaction of the hydroxide ions which helps dissolve the substances that are stuck and clear the clog.
  • Oxidizing drain cleaners utilize substances such as nitrates, peroxides, and bleach which causes the biodegradable material to become oxidized and lose electrons. It’s also a heavier liquid than water so it can move through the standing water, release gas and heat which helps to clear up the blocking substance.
  • Acid drain cleaners are not often found in retail stores and usually only sold to professional plumbers because they have high concentrations of hydrochloric acid or sulfuric acid which increase the hydronium ions in order to attract electrons from the clog. This reaction causes heat which melts substances such as grease, oil, and fat.

These chemical-based drain cleaners can cause your PVC pipes to soften if you use them incorrectly, however, it’s most common that damage will occur in older metal piping. Chemical drain cleaners are dangerously toxic and harm skin, eyes, mucous membranes, and dissolve clothing. The fumes are toxic as well and can even cause explosions. They may kill useful bacteria in the septic system and cause damage to your fixtures. When choosing chemical drain cleaners follow the directions closely. Wear rubber gloves and ensure there is proper ventilation. Don’t use a plunger at the same time as a chemical drain cleaner and don’t mix different kinds of chemical drain cleaners.

Enzymatic Drain Cleaners:

Enzymatic drain cleaners are safer to use and more environmentally friendly because they don’t leak into the water and soil. They utilize enzymes and bacteria which feed on biodegradable waste materials. The disadvantage is that they work slower than chemical cleaners and may take a few hours to clear the clog. They are not as toxic as chemical drain cleaners but you should still take caution when using them.

Home Remedy Drain Cleaner:

  • Pour approximately 125 ml of baking soda down the drain.
  • Pour approximately 125 ml of vinegar down the drain.
  • Wait 10-15 minutes and pour hot tap water into the drain.
  • Mix up baking soda, vinegar, and salt in equal parts and SLOWLY pour down the drain.
  • Flush with hot water.

Why Plumber.ca?

There are several plumbers out there. Many have experience. So why choose us over everyone else? Here are a few reasons:

Even if the job takes more time than required, you still pay the same amount.

check  Upfront, Exact Pricing – Every job we do has a set price shown in our price book. We go through with you exactly what the scope of the work will be to fix your problem and the costs involved. You know before we start what the final price will be -no surprises!

check  Rapid Response Times – Our highly efficient dispatch team will make sure our local plumbers are at your location as soon as possible. Under normal conditions, our technicians will arrive at your location within 48 hours. Service calls can take longer than expected and sometimes specialty parts need to be ordered, which may push the wait times longer than expected.

check  Priority Calls – Emergency calls are our highest priority. We know they can quickly become a serious situation. You can place a priority call to ensure you are the next customer to be serviced. The technician will be at your location within 24 hours. All priority calls require a credit card upon calling.

check  Local Plumbers – There is no sense in calling a plumbing service that is in another city. We have plumbers in all major city centers across the GTA that can respond to your emergency when you need it.

check  Fully Loaded Work Trucks – A fully inventoried truck is crucial so that your problem can not only be diagnosed quickly, but fixed quickly as well. Even if the job requires a specialty part, we can have it ordered within 24 hours.
