Fixing Your Water Pressure Problems

Fixing Water Pressure Problems

Fixing water pressure problems to have just the right water pressure in your household is important and there is certainly a range as to what is considered too high or too low. And there are various circumstances that can change the pressure in an unwelcome direction. If you have water pressure that is too high this can do major damage to your home plumbing system. If the situation is that you have low water pressure this could mean that the issue is much worse than it appears. It is certainly a good use of time to test and investigate the water pressure in your home and learn what the cause of the issue could be in order to take action to bring it to an acceptable level.

You will often notice low water pressure in the shower or at the kitchen sink and this can not only be the symptom of a more serious issue it can also be annoying in itself. Having just a dribble of water makes it frustrating to rinse soap and it shouldn’t be a source of frustration to fill pots of water. You may also notice that there is a whistling noise that accompanies low water pressure in your faucets.

By picking up a water pressure gauge from your local home center or hardware store you can begin the process of fixing water pressure problems by testing directly from the spigot of the hose. Any level below 30 psi is generally too low. Unfortunately, low water pressure can mean you have a leaking pipe which means there is likely damage occurring in a wall, ceiling, or the flooring while it is also adding considerably to your water bill.

Fixing Water Pressure Tips

The best way to check for a leak and start fixing water pressure problems is to turn off all appliances that use water and read your water meter. Prevent any water usage in your household for a couple of hours and then check on the water meter reading again. If the meter has increased there is a leak happening somewhere in your pipe network. Low water pressure can also be caused by some sort of restriction in the pipes caused by a hard water mineral buildup. Or, a worst case problem may be that you have a buried pipe which has caved in and caused a serious blockage. A professional plumber can use plumbing video camera inspection equipment to identify and diagnose the problem quickly.

If the local water municipality is the cause of your low water pressure you can still begin fixing water pressure issues using a system called a pressure tank. This will raise the water pressure in all of your plumbing fixtures. Well systems are most likely to use pressure tanks but can work well to raise the water pressure anywhere that it is required.

If you are hearing a thumping noise after the faucet is turned off, or believe the water is too hard there may be too much water pressure in which case it is best to use your water pressure gauge to test it. If the psi is more than 80 this is too high. Water pressure that is too high places a lot of strain on your plumbing fixtures, pipes, and fittings. You may not notice any issues for a long period of time but eventually, this will cause pipe fittings to fail and to crack. If your home is located at the bottom of a hill, gravity can pose a problem by causing excess pressure running through the municipal pipes. Or, homes located near big buildings with major water usage can cause high water pressure issues.

In any event, you do well to entrust professional plumbing services to inspect your pipe network and fix water pressure problems. While having a pressure regulator installed on your water main line is the best way to ensure your home’s water pressure is kept constant while protecting your pipes.
