Etobicoke, Ontario is a former municipality until 1998 and is located in the western part of Toronto with a current population of over 347,000 people. It has a very multicultural population that includes Middle Easterners, East Asians, South Asians, West Indians, Europeans, and Africans. It is a largely suburban area with several highways intersecting it including the Queen Elizabeth Way, Ontario Highway 427, Gardiner Expressway, Ontario Highway 401, and Ontario Highway 409. It is also connected to Toronto by four subway station as well as four GO train stations. There is one post-secondary institution Humber College which has two separate campuses.
The name Etobicoke comes from a Mississauga word ‘wadoopikaang’ which means ‘place where the alders grow’ which how the area between Humber River and Etobicoke Creek was described. Augustus Jones was the first provincial land surveyor and the name Etobicoke was officially adopted by the Lieutenant Governor John Graves Simcoe in 1795. The township of Etobicoke was incorporated on January 1, 1850 and the population was 2904 at the time. By 1881, the population grew to 2976 and in 1911 the Mimico community was incorporated into Etobicoke. In 1954, the Etobicoke Township became a part of the Municipality of Metropolitan Toronto. It became a borough in 1984 and was incorporated into a city in 1984.
